What’s Happening
How Garage Door Cables Work, and Why They Fail

Your garage door’s lift cables are galvanized steel wires that wrap around the drums at each end of the spring shaft, then run down to brackets at the bottom corners of the door. When the spring unwinds, these cables are what actually pull the door up. They work under high tension every single time the door moves, and over thousands of cycles the individual wire strands begin to fray, especially where they bend around the cable drum.

A fully snapped cable is immediately obvious: the door tilts sharply to one side, the bottom corner hangs loose, and the opener either strains loudly or the safety reversal kicks in and stops it mid-travel. A fraying cable is subtler, the door might feel slightly off-balance or the opener sounds different on one side. Left unaddressed, a fraying cable will snap at the worst possible moment, and in the meantime the uneven tension stresses the spring, drums, and tracks.

Pueblo’s climate contributes here too. Moisture from spring rains and snowmelt, combined with the mineral-heavy water from the Pueblo Reservoir watershed, can cause galvanic corrosion on cable strands. We see more cable failures in older Bessemer and Belmont homes where original cables have never been replaced.

⚠️

Snapped Cable

Door tilts to one side immediately. The bottom corner drops and the opener can’t move the door safely. Requires same-day repair, a door stuck open or ajar is a security risk.

🔗

Fraying Cable

Visible wire strands separating along the cable length. Often spotted during an annual tune-up or when the door starts sounding or feeling “off.” Much safer to replace before it snaps.

Safety Cables

Inside extension spring systems, a steel safety cable runs through the spring itself. If the spring breaks, the safety cable contains it. We inspect and replace these with every cable or spring job.

Our Process
How We Fix Garage Door Cables

Cable replacement looks straightforward but requires releasing spring tension safely before anything can be threaded. Here’s what we do on every call:

1

Safety First

Springs wound down to relieve tension before any cable work begins. Improper spring release is the most common DIY injury in garage repair.

2

Remove & Thread

Old cables removed, drums inspected for grooves or damage, new cables threaded and secured at the bottom bracket and drum correctly.

3

Tension & Wind

Springs re-wound to the correct tension for the door’s weight. Cable tension balanced left-to-right so the door travels evenly.

4

Balance & Test

Door disconnected from opener and tested for level float at mid-height. Opener reconnected, safety reversal tested, limits verified.

Common Questions
Garage Door Cable Repair FAQ
What does a broken garage door cable look like?
The most obvious sign is the door tilting sharply, one side drops and the bottom corner hangs loose. You may also see the cable itself coiled on the floor near the door’s bottom bracket, or a frayed wire dangling from the drum area above. If the door just feels “heavier” on one side or the opener sounds different, that can mean a cable is partially frayed but hasn’t fully snapped yet.
Is a broken garage door cable dangerous?
Yes, in two ways. First, a door with a broken cable can drop suddenly, the springs are still under tension but the door is no longer properly supported on one side. Second, your garage is likely left unsecurable, which is a security risk. Don’t try to operate the door, disconnect the opener and call us for same-day service.
Should I replace both cables at the same time?
We recommend it. Both cables were installed at the same time and see the same amount of use. If one has frayed or snapped, the other is at a similar point in its life. Replacing both while we’re already there is a marginal extra cost vs. paying for a full second service call in a few months.
How long do garage door cables last?
Typically 8–15 years, depending on usage, humidity, and whether the door is properly maintained. Pueblo’s dry climate is easier on cables than coastal areas, but our temperature extremes add stress through repeated expansion and contraction. Annual lubrication of the cable and drum area extends cable life significantly, it’s part of our $89 tune-up service.
Why did my cable break if the door was working fine yesterday?
Cables rarely snap from a single event, they fail after gradual fraying that isn’t visible until the last strand lets go. Often a cable that seemed fine on Tuesday has actually been fraying for months, and the right amount of cold or a slightly off-balance door was the final stressor. This is another reason annual inspections matter, we can spot fraying before it becomes an emergency.
